Community Bank & Trust Co.

Texting Scam

A variation of the Vishing, or telephone, Scam is now being reported. As in the vishing scam, customers receive an automated text message (as opposed to a telephone call) claiming to be from a local financial institution. These messages go out to thousands of residents regardless of which financial institution they patronize. From this, it is clear that the perpetrators are not in possession of specific information for the financial institution that they are impersonating

As with telephone and e-mail scams, the recipient is told their account is frozen, and they must call a certain telephone number (either in the 720 area code or a 866 toll-free number). Once on the phone, the victim is asked for their ATM or Debit Card number and PIN.

Messages claim to be from a variety of banks, and unauthorized ATM withdrawals are occurring in various locations around the world.

Remember, Community Bank & Trust Co. will never ask for your PIN or verification numbers (such as the number on the back of your ATM or debit cards). If you believe you may have been a victim of such a scam, contact your local branch immediately.
